<image:title>Members & Partners - What it is: The Global Platform for Action to End FGM/C is a consortium of civil society organizations, champions, survivors, and grassroots representatives united in a singular mission: to support the abandonment and prevention of female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C). Why/ when it was formed: The Global Platform for Action to end FGM/C came together in early 2019 to place FGM/C high on the agenda of the Women Deliver 2019 conference, through a joint event that was considered among the top 5 ways of making an impact. It was the very first time that representatives from civil society working on FGM worldwide came together united publicly to make FGM/C a thing of the past. Who are the members: The core group is made up of 12 Non-Governmental Organisations who have the common goal of eliminating FGM and supporting Survivors.</image:title>

      <image:title>About FGM/C</image:title>
<image:caption>TYPE I – Clitoridectomy Cutting to fully or partially remove the external part of the clitoris and prepuce. In rare cases, only the prepuce is removed. TYPE II – Excision Cutting to fully or partially remove the external part of the clitoris and the labia minora (inner vaginal lips); with or without excision of the labia majora (outer vaginal lips). The amount of tissue that is removed varies among practitioners and communities. TYPE III – Infibulation Narrowing of the vaginal opening by means of creating a covering seal. The seal is formed by cutting and re-positioning the labia minora and/or labia majora to cover the vaginal opening, sometimes through stitching of the vulva. Only a very small opening is left for urine and menstrual blood. The practice may also include cutting to fully or partial remove the external part of the clitoris (Clitoridectomy). Deinfibulation refers to the re-opening of the vagina by cutting open the covering seal to allow penetration during intercourse or to facilitate childbirth. Reinfibulation may follow intercourse or childbirth, and refers to the practice of sewing the external labia back together after deinfibulation. TYPE IV – All other harmful procedures to the female genitalia for non-medical purposes, such as: pricking, piercing, incising, scraping, and cauterizing the genital area. Incision can mean: making cuts in the clitoris or cutting free the clitoral prepuce, incisions in the vagina wall, or incision of the perineum and the symphysis. In praxis, there is considerable overlap between these types, and procedures differ between regions, communities, and among cutters. Estimates indicate that most cases (90%) fall under Type I, II, or IV. Infibulation (Type III) is prevalent in 10% of FGM/C-cases.</image:caption>

<image:title>Survivor Stories - I was born in Toronto, Canada. I was 7 years old when my parents took us to Somalia. We were only supposed to go back for the summer, but that was a lie. My sister, my brother and I stayed there for about three years. Not knowing whether we were ever going to be allowed to return back to Canada, we were left there to stay with our grandma as our parents returned back home. One morning, my grandma decided to wake my sister and I up for breakfast. But at the time I wasn't hungry, so she took my sister to our second house across the street. Then a couple of minutes later she came back for me. I thought that was very odd because she never pressured me to eat breakfast. After the multiple attempts at guilting me, I agreed and went to the second house not knowing what I was getting myself into.</image:title>

      <image:title>Survivor Stories - Kaddy (British Columbia)</image:title>
<image:caption>In the summer of 2003 my siblings and I were laughing and telling stories on the balcony of my father's house. In Africa, summer is a time to play and share stories under the moonlight with family and friends; a time when every girls' dream is for her parents to buy her new clothes for her vacation. I was sent to spend the holidays with my grandma who I really love and am very close with. She was always there for me when I was growing up and taught me the ways and traditions of Gambia. Before I returned home to my father and stepmother, my Grandma bought me some lovely clothes and traditional African jewellery. I was so happy. Back at my father's house, on the 25th of August 2003 at 4 a.m., my stepmother woke me up. I was very surprised to be woken up that early. I was only thirteen and had to obey. I showered and then noticed she was talking to another women who had arrived with three young girls my age.</image:caption>

<image:caption>When I was 7 my mom took us back home. I had no idea this was going to happen. This lady came over and then there were people holding me down and I couldn’t get away. They cut me. I didn’t have a choice. I didn’t even know what it was. But I felt like something had been taken away from me. I wasn’t whole anymore. I learned afterward that this lady was the local cutter. That was her job. I had Type 1. My family knew about the more severe types and they wouldn’t have done that. But they thought Type 1 was for hygiene and that you needed to be cut to be marriageable. It might be hard for people to understand but my family think that if a girl doesn’t get married and have kids, she can’t be happy. Especially when she’s old, she will be all alone because she doesn’t have children or grandchildren to look after her. It’s the worst fate they can imagine for a girl, to not have her own family.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The End FGM Canada Network is a non-partisan group of individuals and organizations working to end female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C) and support survivors both in Canada and abroad. We urge the Canadian government to acknowledge that FGM/C is an issue here too, and to create a National Action Plan that clearly outlines policies and practices to best support survivors and to protect girls at risk in Canada. We also encourage the Canadian government to focus more development aid on the human rights battle to end FGM/C worldwide. The Network unites members and stakeholders across Canada to share knowledge and foster collaboration within the field of FGM/ C, with a focus on creating platforms for engagement and offering trauma-informed culturally sensitive tools to enable frontline professionals to address FGM/C in Canadian communities. We also work with our international partners to advance the discourse and human rights battle to end FGM/C worldwide.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Impact - Advocacy with Government</image:title>
<image:caption>We’ve been engaging with all levels of government. From coast to coast, twenty-two cities and four provinces proclaimed February 6th as the International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation. In many cities, mayors read the proclamation into the record at council meetings. In November, on the floor of the provincial legislature in Alberta, Leela Aheer, the Minister of Culture, Multiculturalism and Status of Women, recognized Female Genital Mutilation as a Canadian issue. Later the same day she hosted a screening of In the Name Of Your Daughter at the Royal Alberta Museum. The network is also engaged in discussions with Global Affairs and the Department for Women and Gender Equality (WAGE) on ways to address FGM/C in the Canadian and international contexts.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Impact</image:title>
<image:caption>IMPACT REPORT : YEAR 1 (2019) Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting is a Canadian issue too! Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting is the most serious systematic abuse of girls’ and women’s human rights in the world today. It has no basis in religion and is a global problem that needs a global solution. Many Canadians think FGM/C is something that happens in faraway places, but that’s not true. A recent report shows that FGM/C is an issue in more than 90 countries, including Canada. For decades, the Canadian government has known that there may be thousands of girls at risk of female genital mutilation/cutting. Yet it has done little to protect them. There are also thousands of survivors in Canada who get little support. In 1994, the Canadian government formed a Federal Interdepartmental Working group to address FGM/C. Six years later the group issued a report that made dozens of recommendations. This was the promising dedication at the front: “This report is dedicated to all the women in the world who have undergone FGM and to all the people who are helping them live with and reverse this procedure. This report is part of the ongoing commitment of Canadians and the Government of Canada to stop this practice in Canada and to improve the health and well-being of affected women and their communities.” Shortly afterwards, the government shelved the report and very little has happened since. Twenty years on, Canada still has no official statistics on the number of survivors of FGM/C in Canada. We still don’t know how many girls are at risk. There is still very little support for survivors. And there are still no official protocols to save girls from FGM/C. It’s time to change that.</image:caption>

<image:caption>We showed the documentary In The Name Of Your Daughter at the Vancity Cinema on the eve of the Women Deliver conference. Some of the world’s most influential female genital mutilation activists came to see this Canadian film. On a panel afterwards, several of the campaigners tackled the question- “Female Genital Mutilation-A Western Issue Too? They included Shelby Quast from Equality Now, Aissata Camara from There is No Limit Foundation, and Mariya Taher from Sahiyo. Co-Founder Giselle Portenier took to the stage at the Women Deliver conference in Vancouver. Portenier is the director of the documentary In The Name Of Your Daughter and a founding member of the End FGM Canada Network. She gave a moving power talk inspired by the brave girls in her documentary, ‘In the name of your daughter’.</image:caption>

<image:caption>We supported the refugee claim of the family of Rasheedat and Afeez Bakare and their children. They came to Canada to protect their new-born daughter Faiqah from Female Genital Mutilation. When they were threatened with deportation, the End FGM Canada Network jumped into action. We contacted our grass roots contacts in Nigeria. With their help, we wrote a letter in support of the family to the Canadian government. We helped mobilize media attention to this case. Eventually, the Bakare family received a 6-month reprieve.</image:caption>

<image:title>Impact - February 6th, International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation ‘Operation Proclamation’ For February 6th, we launched ‘Operation Proclamation’ to increase awareness. We wanted cities and provinces across Canada to proclaim Feb 6 as the International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation. Twenty two cities and four provinces issued the proclamations. In St. John’s Newfoundland, FGM/C survivor Maryam Sheik was in council chambers as Mayor Danny Breen read the proclamation out loud. Afterwards she addressed city council with a moving speech. A few days later, in Newfoundland's Confederation building, Maryam received the provincial declaration from Carol Anne Haley, the Minister for the Status of Women. Maryam, who was mutilated at the tender age of six, told the Minister her story. From coast to coast, the proclamations were read aloud. In Alberta, Leela Aheer, Minister of Culture, Multiculturalism and the Status of Women held a launch to publicize the event. Regina, Saskatchewan was the only city in all of Canada that outright refused to issue a proclamation. They said "we can't take sides on this issue; we can’t be for or against.’ It shows how much work is still needed for Canadians to understand that FGM/C is a human rights issue. Full Stop. (Video Available of several proclamations being read, and photos, and poster) Heroes of Change Each day for thirty days on twitter we featured ‘heroes of change.' These heroes are people who are working to make change on FGM/C in Canada. Among the heroes were Calgary Doctor Angela Deane; FGM/C survivors Maryam Sheik and Farzana Doctor; journalist Karlene Nation from Missisauga’s Sauga 960; Leela Aheer, Alberta’s Minister of Culture, Multiculturalism and Status of Women; Vancouver youth campaigners Malaika Somji and Rosie Makore from Tanzania. Other February 6th Actions Screenings of the documentary In The Name Of Your Daughter inspired audiences in St. John’s, Ottawa, and Toronto. In Toronto, the screening was co-sponsored by City Councillor Kristen Wong Tam , Amref Health Africa Canada, Islamic Relief, We Speak Out, and the Arab Community Centre of Toronto. Afterwards a panel addressed the Canadian nature of FGM/C. The panel included FGM survivor and network co-founder Farzana Doctor; Reyhana Patel from Islamic Relief Canada; Jacobet Edith from Uzima International; and Afeez Bakare, whose family is seeking asylum in Canada to protect their daughters from Female Genital Mutilation.

Uniting Forces to Ensure that FGM/C is a Practice of the Past was a sold-out event with activists from around the world. One of the speakers was our youngest founding member, 16-year-old Malaika Somj. Afterwards, Anastacia Mashindana draped a tribal necklace around Malaika’s neck. The Maasai women from a Maasai from Kenya. said to Malaika, ‘you are my daughter. Two generations of activists united by a common cause.</image:caption>

<image:title>Impact (Copy) - February 6th, International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation ‘Operation Proclamation’ For February 6th, we launched ‘Operation Proclamation’ to increase awareness. <image:caption>IMPACT REPORT : YEAR 1 Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting is a Canadian issue too!

<image:caption>I was born in Somalia. When I was three, my aunt, who had moved to Canada a few years earlier, persuaded my mother I would have a better life if I went with her. I grew up with my aunt in rural Ontario, but I never forgot my mother. When I was 13, my aunt and I traveled to Somalia to see her again. Early one morning, three village women burst into the hut where I was sleeping. My mother had summoned them when she learned that I hadn’t undergone the traditional Somali rite of circumcision. I started screaming and tried to run. The women caught me, pinned me down, spread my legs, and, after administering a local anesthetic, cut off the tip of my clitoris. Then they sewed part of my labia shut over the cut. I could see blood gushing down my thighs, then I passed out.</image:caption>

<image:title>Stories (Copy) - I was born in Toronto, Canada.

<image:title>Partners (Copy) - What it is: The Global Platform for Action to End FGM/C is a consortium of civil society organizations, champions, survivors, and grassroots representatives united in a singular mission: to support the abandonment and prevention of female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C).
