Teachers Webinar: ‘Vacation Cutting’

Join us on May 30, 2022, with special guest Hibo Wardere, for an educational webinar on how to protect thousands of girls who are at risk of ‘Vacation Cutting’ this summer.

FGM/C was added to Canada’s Criminal Code in 1997 under Section 268 in the form of “aggravated assault.” It is also illegal to take children out of the country to have the practice performed, a concept known as “vacation cutting”. Despite having been made illegal at the federal level, vacation cutting remains an all too common practice for Candian residents and citizens seeking the procedure for their daughters and other family members. With FGM’s long and uncertain recovery period, summer vacation, in particular, provides a perfect opportunity and cover-up for a trip that has FGM on the itinerary. With passport applications going through the roof, we see it imperative that teachers learn how to protect their students as the first line of defense.

The more teachers are educated on FGM/C, the closer we get to ending this human rights abuse in Canada. Proper training of educators and advocates working directly with at-risk girls, their families, and their communities are key to enforcing these laws and changing the underlying beliefs that perpetuate this human rights abuse.

This webinar will teach educators; how to recognize the warning signs, and how to best approach families and communities, to be better equipped to protect their students.
