UNFPA & UNICEF launch the 2022 Annual Report on the Elimination of FGM: Reimagining Resilience: Eliminating FGM in the Context of the Polycrisis

The 2022 Global Annual Report showcases key accomplishments, lessons learned, and our priorities for the future. It also underscores the pivotal role of adolescent girls and young women in leading transformative change, alongside grassroots organizations and social movements, while leveraging innovation and technology to sustain momentum towards gender equality and the elimination of FGM.

Additionally, the Annual Report includes 17 country profiles, providing further insights into the results and strategies implemented in each country: Burkina Faso, Djibouti, Egypt, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gambia, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Kenya, Mali, Mauritania, Nigeria, Senegal, Somalia, Sudan,  Uganda, and Yemen.

Non-Governmental Organization (NGOs) & Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) Unite to Urge The Gambia’s Government to Uphold Landmark Law Banning Female Genital Mutilation

Equality Now has collaborated with GAMCOTRAP (Gambia Committee on Traditional Practices Affecting the Health of Women and Children), The Association of Non-Governmental Organizations (TANGO), the Network against Gender Based Violence (NGBV) in The Gambia, and The Orchid Project in writing an open letter to the Government of The Gambia, calling on it to protect the law passed in 2015 criminalizing FGM/C.

2015 law in The Gambia criminalizing female genital mutilation/cutting is under major attack from some senior politicians and religious leaders pushing for the law to be repealed. This is in response to the country’s first conviction for FGM/C - three women were found guilty in August for performing FGM/C on eight infants. There have been discussions in parliament parliamentary debates advocating for repeal and a fatwa supporting FGM/C has been released. So far 180 CSOs from around the world, including End FGM Canada Network, have signed.

Addressing female genital mutilation in Europe: a scoping review of approaches to participation, prevention, protection, and provision of services

Public and policy attention to female genital mutilation (FGM) in diaspora communities has increased in Europe, but research remains limited and misinformation abounds. As a first step to addressing these issues, this study explored FGM prevention and response interventions in Europe, using a scoping literature review and key informant interviews.
